Highway survey

  • Bang Pa In Expressway
    • Tue 13 Feb 2007, k.Yuttana (mb.089 124 3346)( DSCN6119.JPG) from BECL (บ.ทางด่วนกรุงเทพ จำกัด (มหาขน)) was a great help today. A collection of traffic videos were collected from CCTV cameras at Bang Pa In expresssway exit for software test. Furthermore, Chinese New Year traffic over this weekend (17-18 Feb) will be collected to simulate Song Kran traffic ( DSCN6111.JPG, DSCN6118.JPG). Video signal from each CCTV camera on the 2nd expressway is transmitted via fibre optic cable to this centre ( DSCN6102.JPG). The signal is then converted ( DSCN6103.JPG) and connected to a switchboard ( DSCN6105.JPG).
    • Furthermore, a DVR system is also installed ( DSCN6089.JPG, DSCN6106.JPG). However, video from DVR system has limited frame rate of 3-5fps which is not applicable to the image processing system.
    • A VD system (I think, VD stands for vehicle detector) is also installed at many sites on BECL expressway. However, the VD system accuracy is unreliable when compared to traffic police speed sensors ( DSCN6115.JPG).
  • PTT stations
    • Tue 13 Feb 2007. Visits were paid to two PTT stations near Bangkok University.     • Inbound brach ( DSCN6131.JPG), คุณธีรเดช (station manager, mb.089 969 5760) provided assistance to the visit. สถานีบริการนำ้มัน ปตท สาขาคลองหลวง 17/19 หมู่ 4 ถนนพหลโยธิน ต.คลองหนึ่ง อ.คลองหลวง จ.ปทุมธานี 12120, GPS location is at N14deg 01.614' E100deg36.982'.

    • Outbound branch
    • The so-called "Highway Sign" or PTT signage by the roadside ( DSCN6120.JPG, DSCN6124.JPG, DSCN6139.JPG) is approximately 25m high. This height is estimated using the number of steps on the structure where each step is approx. 30cm apart ( DSCN6125.JPG, DSCN6126.JPG).
    • Fri 2 Mar 2007. A visit was paid to PTT station on Rama 2 Road, at approximately Km.... (บริษัท ชัยวิวัฒน์การปิโตรเลียม จำกัด 12/31 หมู่ 3 ต.บางกระเจ้า อ.เมือง จ.สมุทรสาคร 74000, GPS coords N13deg.46.847' E100deg10.560') where 10 lanes are narrowed into 4 lanes of traffic ( DSCN7067.JPG), from this picture we can see also the a u-turn bridge which could block camera view. คุณจรรยา จิตติพันธ์พรณี และ คุณคัมภีย์ (t.034 822 282/147), the station manager, allowed us to survey the station ( DSCN7071.JPG, DSCN7063.JPG, DSCN7065.JPG). K.Chanya confirmed exact height of the PTT highway sign as 25m high. Two highway police officers from the local highway office (หน่วยสอบสวนตำรวจทางหลวงเอกชัย) were also there to give invaluable information on the traffic conditions at various times of day/week/year ( DSCN7061.JPG, DSCN7074.JPG). Basically, when traffic volume reaches certain level, the narrowing roads and nature of Thai drivers - overtaking on left lane and cutting in front of other traffic - combine to form traffic buildup in very short time. The queue length could be as long as 6 km, according to Highway Police Officer Suchart (mb.081 655 8044). Furthermore, k.Chanya - the station manager - also talked to us about potential problems for camera and processor installation on the PTT highway sign. The potential problems include (1) heat (2) height (3) animals living inside the poles.
    • Tue 6 Mar 2007. K.Winai informed us that PTT had a plan to install cameras at their petrol stations around the country. Therefore, this Song Kran project'd be useful for PTT as a case study. Since 15 Jan 2007, A Highway Police พ.ต.ท.สุริยัน วินิจมนตรี (mb.081 433 2000, tawan2440@gmail.com) has been collaborating with NECTEC's ITS Cluster to work on the Songkran project. A number of camera locations have been identified to monitor Bangkok outbound as well as inbound traffic.

On Tue 13 Feb 07, I stopped by the site to take some videos and photos ( DSCN6152.JPG, DSCN6147.JPG). From the brief visit, location for camera installation is still unclear considering safety, security, and royal crest issues ( DSCN6154.JPG, DSCN6156.JPG, DSCN6158.JPG, DSCN6148.JPG).
      • ร.พ.มิตรภาพเมโมเรียล สระบุรี (คุณธนินทร์ สรรพกิจ ผู้ช่วยผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายบริหาร mb.081 942 6059), GPS coordinates are N14deg 31.232' E100deg 54.917' ( DSCN5896.JPG, DSCN5892.JPG). A view from the rooftop of the hospital provides a good camera angle ( DSCN5886.JPG), however, some kind of security for the camera and communications system is required as there have been many incidents recently regarding thieves ( DSCN5868.JPG, DSCN5869.JPG).

    • Petkasem (No.4) at Km.42 ท่าตำหนัก - there should be a camera installed by Phetchinda Civil Engineering (Khun Napaporn Petchinda, mb.081 190 1999, email: pae@multimedia-advertising.com). On Fri 2 Mar 07, Capt.Suriyan and Dr.Supakorn surveyed the Division 2 highway police office (GPS coords N13deg46.573' E100deg10.748)( DSCN7033.JPG). It was fun climbing up the roof top of the highway office ( DSCN7027.JPG, DSCN7017.JPG, DSCN7024.JPG). Signal from the dome camera is supposedly sent over the a PC on the ground floor ( DSCN7038.JPG) which also has communications to the internet ( DSCN7034.JPG).
    • Rama 2 (No.35) at Km.35 reducing number of lanes from 10 to 4. Need to survey for a suitable camera location. See PTT station at บริษัท ชัยวิวัฒน์การปิโตรเลียม จำกัด.
    • Highway No.35 (Rama 2 Road) - Highway Police Office (หน่วยบริการประชาชนตำรวจทางหลวงเอกชัย DSCN7082.JPG)(GPS coords N13deg35.280' E100deg19.541'). The so-called "high mast" highway light pole ( DSCN7076.JPG), is an ideal location for camera installation.

BECL (Bangkok Expressway PCL)

Tue 20 Mar 2007, a team from NECTEC visited BECL Bang Poon control centre. Hands-on demonstration of the image processing software was shown to BECL staff ( DSCN7378.JPG, DSCN7380.JPG, DSCN7385.JPG, DSCN7398.JPG, DSCN7400.JPG). An example log file can be found here ( 20070318.txt).

Wed 14 Mar 2007, k.Siriwut from BECL Bang Poon picked up test results run on Chinese New Year traffic during 17-18 Feb 2007 weekend.

Advantech

Thu 3 Jan 2008, unable to boot with proper VGA display nor in safe mode. Possible solution is to boot from thumbdrive, see also WeetHet - Boot from USB Flash drive, BootDisks - PC Support - Essential Utilities, and PowerLoad Resource Site.

Wed 14 Mar 2007, UNO has been returned to IBCON.

Thu 1 Mar 2007, k.Chatri delivered another UNO-3072 system ( DSCN6997.JPG). This latest UNO has 2 PCI slots ( DSCN7000.JPG, DSCN7001.JPG), which allows installation of video capture card. The system has Pentium M 1.4GHz with 512 RAM and 2.5" notebook harddisk.

Mon 19 Feb 2007, k.Chatri came in with another UNO-2160. This system had a laptop harddisk storage. It was tested with the image processing software. Results showed that the frame rate was only 2-3fps. It can be concluded that the storage access speed was not the whole factor of slow frame rate.

Wed 7 Feb 2007, Mr.Johnny Ma (johnny.ma@advantech.com.tw), product sales manager from Advantech Taiwan, together with คุณชาตรี ปิยวัชรวิจิตร (t.02 917 3780, mb.089 993 3737) came to deliver a test module Advantech UNO-2160. The test system specification can be found at http://www.advantech.com/products/Model_Detail.asp?model_id=1-IS7GE. Basically, it has 400MHz Intel Celeron, 256MB RAM, 1GB CF storage with Windows XP embeded SP1. Photos can be seen here ( DSCN5970.JPG, DSCN5971.JPG, DSCN5975.JPG, and DSCN5977.JPG).

  • Test results: an off-line traffic image processing test was carried out. It's been found that the test system, with its CF card storage, had inadequate harddisk speed for this application. Basically, the video playback speed was so slow that the tracking process was not performing as expected. This problem was communicated to k.Chatri at IBCON on 13 Feb 07 and the test system will be replaced by another system with laptop harddisk instead of CF storage.

Installation work by JOWIT at Mittrapab memorial hospital ( DSCN7466.JPG, DSCN7439.JPG, DSCN7443.JPG, DSCN7448.JPG, DSCN7456.JPG, DSCN7421.JPG, DSCN7459.JPG, DSCN7417.JPG, DSCN7416.JPG). K.Surachai Peokaew, production manager of JOWIT (mb.081 341 3558), kindly brought camera and lens for testing prior to delivery from the production line on 2 April 2007.

Thu 15 Mar 2007. Installation survey with JOWIT's team ( DSCN7244.JPG), k.Wi (mb.081 850 6947) and k.Chakkrapan (mb.087 000 0701), was conducted over 5 sites.

Fri 2 Mar 2007, k.Chaiwat from JOWIT confirmed that, by using a properly shielded RG6 cable, video signal can be transmitted over 300m with satisfactory signal integrity.

Thu 8 Feb 2007, a KOBI IP camera ( DSCN5978.JPG, DSCN5979.JPG, DSCN5980.JPG, DSCN5981.JPG), a CCTV camera ( DSCN5990.JPG, DSCN5992.JPG), and a capture card ( DSCN5987.JPG, DSCN5988.JPG) have been loaned from JOWIT. Thu 1 Mar 2007, a group of NECTEC researchers paid another visit to Sor Wor Por 91 (FM91MHz) traffic radio station ( DSCN6986.JPG, DSCN6945.JPG) - first visit took place on Fri 9 Feb 2007. K.Sunyalux Ruangrujira (Business Development VP of CaraCAD? Services Co.Ltd, t.02 948 5301, fax.02 519 5027, mb.081 814 4102, sunyalux@caracad.co.th) talked us through the operations within the station ( DSCN6967.JPG). We took a tour of the radio station. this lady has one of the quickest hands in the business, she clicks a mouse button at lease 4 times faster than everyone I know ( DSCN6972.JPG). The 1644 team ( DSCN6974.JPG). The broadcast room and a DJ in action ( DSCN6975.JPG).
